Reclaiming Food Security and Resilience: Indigenous Leadership and Innovation in British Columbia

  • B.linc Workshop 85084 Ellesmere Junction Road Lincoln, Canterbury, 7647 New Zealand (map)

Dr. Lilia Yumagulova is a Bashkir woman, and an immigrant and settler on Squamish territory in Canada. Lilia’s research as a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow, Indigenous Studies, University of Saskatchewan focuses on Indigenous self-determination and the role of women in disaster risk reduction, climate displacement, and planned relocation. She is the Program Director for the Preparing Our Home program, an award-winning program that empowers Indigenous youth leadership in community resilience.

In this talk, Lilia will share a recent Preparing Our Home project focused on First Nations food security and emergency preparedness in British Columbia, Canada. Supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, this project engaged with over 180 participants from over 40 nations across British Columbia. Lilia will share some of the key findings from this work:

1) First Nations have been leaders in food security and emergency preparedness since time immemorial. Despite colonial efforts to erase the Indigenous Ways of Life, there are remarkable examples of leadership and innovation in the space of food security and food sovereignty in some communities.

2) First Nations in B.C. are disproportionately impacted by emergencies, food insecurity, and negative climate change impacts given their reliance on land, waters, non-human kin, and Indigenous Food Systems. Industry, unsustainable resource use, development, and harmful emergency management practices exacerbate these impacts.

3) There is an acute need for an intersectional approach in supporting food security and emergency preparedness to ensure that the needs of those most severely impacted by food insecurity and lack of preparedness (e.g. single mothers living off reserve) are addressed.

Inspiring examples of how communities are reclaiming, revitalizing, and restoring Indigenous Food Systems will also be shared.
